EBN - Flying start for Jones
Young Newmarket-based trainer Jack Jones has been making a name for himself recently, having trained seven winners on the Flat since taking out his licence just over a year ago and saddling his first winner over hurdles last week from just a small group of horses, writes Alex Scott.
“I started with three horses and things have slotted into place nicely”, said Jones. “We’re looking for angles to get more clients and more horses, but I’m keeping my head down and kicking on.”
The 28-year-old, who has already worked for an array of trainers across the globe, including David Simcock, Richard Spencer, Ger Lyons, Mikel Delzangles and Chris Waller, trained his first winner in November when new recruit Chagall (Slade Power) won a handicap at Chelmsford, “We picked him up from Ireland and he won on his first start for us. He was rated 46 when he first came to us and progressed to 60, winning twice and finishing second four times. He’s a handy horse and he’s been a star for us. The first winner is one you’ll never forget!”
A handy bit of placing also saw the seven-year-old gelding pick up some decent prize money as Jones explains: “He finished second at Bath on Good Friday and that was frustrating, but he won over £6,000, more than he would have won for winning another race anywhere else that week.”
